Pitching presentation when in Olleh Map Tech Day(2014)

I have a few mottos that guide my life. As time goes by the mottos that I have kept in mind have also changed like below.

Be prepared! Lucky is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

This phrase comes from the book “The Last Lecture“
And it also has guided me when I am in 30s

知之者不如好之者好之者不如樂之者(아는 자는 좋아하는 자만 못하고, 좋아하는 자는 즐기는 자만 못하다)

I don’t know why this phrase has been my motto when I was in 40s
I thought software development was most intriguing work and I loved that most.

Do not allow setbacks to set you back!

This phrase makes me keep going from the start of my 50s.
This phrase touched me when I was listening to TED talks

As a software developer

I have experienced software development for almost 30 years. I can summarize the area I was involved in as follows:

Merchant Server

My first full time job as a software developer
Merchant server as a package solution was not popular at that time so there were so many trial and errors
My role was implementing product catalog and graphical installer using java language

Web Mail Server

Maybe the web mail server I developed was the first commercial solution known to Korea.
The main language was JavaScript, and I was involved in the whole bunch of work as a technical leader

X-Internet Solution

Presentation Server known as X-Internet is a solution that converts the static web page into dynamic application without page refresh. Those solutions were popular at that time.
I was involved in revamping server logic for more developer friendly and productivity enhancements.

RIA(Rich Internet Application) Solution

RIA solution based on JSF(Java Server Page)
A software solution that supports developing dynamic web applications through WISWYG tool

Web Mail System based on RESTful API

Developed webmail solution based on RESTful API to make developing web UI more flexible
Unfortunately this project was dropped in the middle of development because of company internal issues.

Mobile Web App Development IDE

Mobile Web App development tool based on HTML5
This tool make the mobile app development with easy (SPA – Single Page App)

This solution was donated to the public as a Open Source(2013.05)

Web Based Tile Map Engine

Map engine development from scratch. This map engine well adapts to the mobile environment and provides a lot of features including marker clusters, animations, enhanced UX.
I gave a presentation with the map engine at the tech conference “올레맵 테크 데이” in 2014

OpenGL ES based Vector Map Engine

OpenGL ES based native map engine development from scratch.
It provides enhanced UX like pinching, panning, 3D etc.
This map engine(streaming) has been embedded in car-navigation app “Olleh Navi”, “One Navi” from 2015 as commercial purpose

Route Planning Engine for Car Navigation

Java based route planning(optimal path from start to destination) engine development from scratch.
This engine is consist of route planning and route guidance
Although the engine was developed in 2013 it paved the way to developing commercial car navigation app “On Navi” later in 2019 and played a crucial role in gaining high routing quality

One-Navi App Development

All the features On-Navi provides are developed by solely KT developers(In-house)
Main features(map engine, route planning engine) of this navigation app was developed by the team I managed.
My role in this project was a project manager as well as team leader. The period spent doing this project was the most hardest time in my life.

I’m working now on developing AI-Agent (2025)

I’m looking into multi-agent collaborating system.
I’m interested in agent technologies for implementing ai agents like langchain, langgraph

Memorable moments

I love to go out for hiking mountains whenever time permits and am interested in observing the secret life of trees.

The most impressive mountain trails I have hiked are 지리산(성삼재 ~ 대원사) and 설악산(오색 ~ 공룡능선 ~ 비선대 ~ 소공원) mountain trails. I had the hardest time when I hiked 설악산 even though the length of the 설악산 trail(21km) is half the 지리산 trail (42km). Because 공룡능선 was tough and rocky as well as it was unable to get some water in the middle of the trail.

When I hiked 광양 백운산, there were surreal episodes. Those memories are so valuable enough to be my turning point in my life. Temple stay in 월정사 was another memorable moment. People that appears in photo below got a privileged visit to the secret forest thanks to a monk who guided us. The story that the monk told us moved me.

As a forest interpreter

Observing trees is one of my hobbies I like the most. So I got a qualification for “Forest Interpreter” in 2020. The certificate was issued by Korea Forest Service.

There was compelling need for me to record the growth of trees to study and identify its changing appearance by seasons. As a software developer I made my mind to develop an app for recording the growth of trees. So I developed the Supiami app on my own. I want to enhance this supiami app as an intermediator between human and trees by introducing social networking features in this app. I think that those features will tighten bonds with trees and even between people more strong.

Forest Academy in Germany

I had a lucky chance to participate in Wohlleben’s forest academy program located in Wershofen, Germany in 2023.05 And also had a chance to meet Peter Wohlleben who is the worldwide best seller author of the book “The Hidden Life of Trees“. It was a great honor to meet the author in person.
