사람주나무는 ‘새를 잡는 끈끈이’를 만들 수 있는 나무라는 뜻이어서 흥미롭지만 사람이라는 말이 쓰이게 된 것은 ‘새를 잡는 끈끈이’와는 거리가 너무나 멀다. 이 나무에 사람주나무라는 이름이 붙은 것은 이 나무의 껍질이 사람의 피부처럼 희고 매끄러워서 붙여진 이름이라고 한다(정태현, 1942년) 옛날사람들은 여름철이면 귀찮을 정도로 사람이나 가축들을 괴롭히는 날아다니는 작은 곤충들을 잡기 위해 사람주나무에서 나오는 끈끈한 수액을 뽑아 “작은 새나 벌레, 파리” 따위를 잡는 데 쓰는 약을 만들어 썼다고 하니 사람들 입장에서는 매우 유용한 약을 공급해주는 고마운 식물인 셈이다. 사람주나무는 대극과 사람주나무속의 낙엽활엽…
